Ring size guide

In the UK, the average ring size for ladies is L 1/2, and for men, it’s a Q. Still, in 2021, there’s no sure-fire way to find out someone’s ring size without them knowing. This is maybe why just under half of all engagement rings end up being resized. It is not an exact science.

Using a bit of detective work and with some tips from people who have been there before, we’ll try and help you narrow it down; that is, if asking either your partner or seeking help from their friends or family is not an option.  Note that, if these options are available to you, you should use them, as it will make the process a lot easier. Sisters are often an especially good source of info.

Most jewellers will have a ring sizing tool that has 64 ring sizes that go from A-Z+++++, with half sizes in between. However, most people will fall within a certain range.

You really want to be able to get the ring on the finger when you’re down on one knee, so going a little bigger is advisable.  It can always be sized down afterwards, but it’s definitely worth putting some thought and effort into getting the size as accurate as possible.

If you are proposing to a woman, then she will likely fall into one of 3 size categories.

Narrowing it down to three means you can compare and contrast other hands you see. You can also use your observations and common sense and take into account your partners height and build to gauge their size.

The three size categories are:
H - I1/2

J - L ½

M - O

You can also subdivide men into 3 general categories, and the same rules apply.

M - N1/2

O - Q1/2

R - T1/2

You can also try measuring a ring that they already wear though this can be tricky; are you sure they wear it on the right finger and how thick is it?  These both need to be taken into account.

What if I get the wrong ring size?

We make all of our rings by hand to order, in our East London workshop and, when you commission us to make a ring, we’ll ask you for size.  We acknowledge that this can be really tricky, so a free resizing is included in the price of the ring, including collection and delivery.

This normally takes as little as two days, but at really busy times it can take a little longer.

Can my ring be resized?

Most rings can be resized either up or down, however, there are some caveats and limitations. If you have a ring that has a shank that’s fully diamond set, then this can cause some issues. You will be limited as to how many sizes either up or down it can go and there may end up being a gap in the diamonds.

Where diamond set shoulders are concerned, you may be limited as to how many sizes either up or down you are able to go because of how this effects the settings of the diamonds on the rings shoulders.
